Some great games to bring friends and family together over the festive season.
Some great games to bring friends and family together over the festive season.

Christmas is a great time for families and friends to sit down and play games together, although if you asked us we'd say any time is a great time to play games! There is no better way to bring everyone in your home together than sitting around the table (or in the comfort of your armchair in some cases) and playing a thought provoking, interactive, competitive or co-operative game. Playing a game isn't simply about finding a winner, it's a shared experience of laughter, banter, fun, conversation, and competition. And playing a game is the perfect way to get off those screens and stop the doomscrolling!

Here are 5 games that we think could fill your Christmas and New Year with fun, laughter and thinky family enjoyment.

  1. Ticket to Ride.

The Ticket to Ride games from Days of Wonder are a brilliant and varied introduction to the world of board games. They are simple to learn but have a great deal of strategy that changes with each play, and they have variety within the different editions of the game, of which there are plenty! If you want a very quick, easy to play and set-up game, then the small box City versions are perfect. Our favourite is Berlin, but you can also get London, New York, Amsterdam, Paris, and San Francisco. If it's a longer, more in depth version you're after, then you can't go wrong with Ticket to Ride: Europe or the huge Rails and Sails. And if those tickle your fancy to try more, and you're feeling adventurous, Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West is a mammoth legacy game, in which you complete 12 different scenarios that provide a unique campaign, leaving each group that plays it with their own set of rules and a customised board that can be used for ever after! It is simply brilliant.

  1. Love Letter.

Love Letter is a wonderful card game of 'risk and social deduction' from Z-Man Games that is great for games players of all experiences. Players start with one card, pick up a 2nd from the deck and choose one to play. The aim is simply to be the person left at the end of the round with the highest value card, but the different cards allow players to take different actions, such as swap cards with another player, look at another player's hand, force a player to discard a card, and so on. It is brilliant fun, simple yet thinky, and whatever group of friends we've played it with, everyone has loved it. And if you fancy a different theme, there are versions based on everything from Star Wars to Bridgerton!

  1. Horrified.

Another game that has different variants is the brilliant co-operative game, Horrified, from Prospero Hall Games. In Horrified, players work together to save a village from the monsters from the classic Universal Studios horror movies, such as Dracula, Frankenstein and his Bride, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. Each monster you face has a different challenge to overcome before you defeat them, and to do it you have to work as a team, sharing ideas, planning actions and using your band of heroic characters to save the villagers and eliminate the monsters. For an easy game you can play with just 2 monsters on the board, for a real challenge you can play with 4, and boy does that become a challenge! As well as the original Universal Studios monsters version, there are 4 others including Greek Monsters, Dungeons and Dragons, and American monsters (e.g. Bigfoot). Each version provides a different challenge, and different ways to defeat the monsters, but the original is a great place to start your Horrified adventure!

  1. Hitster.

Hitster is a music party game from Jumbo Games in which players attempt to arrange 10 songs in chronological order. Sounds easy? Starting with one revealed song on a card, on their turn players listen to 20-30 seconds of music by scanning the QR code on another card, and they have to place it on their personal timeline, before, after, or in between their other cards. Get it wrong and the other players can race to steal your card and add it to their timeline. Get 10 songs in the correct order to win. Fast, fun, and perfect for a quick blast of musical nostalgia!

  1. Flip 7.

Flip 7 is a fast paced card game from TheOp Games which has been taking the games world by storm. It's a quick to learn and play, push-your-luck card game in which players attempt to turn over 7 numbered cards in numerical order without going bust. It's a little like Play Your Cards Right, but some cards have powerful actions and the deck is pyramid-style, so there are different numbers of cards of different values, with twelve numbered 12 and only one number 1 card! It's possible to play with groups of almost any size and is another great addition to your festive party games.
